This type of body love almost doesn’t apply to me (and I suspect anybody else with an invisible, chronic illness)- my body was fine (well, I had image issues, but alas) before my chronic illness, and now the pain and changes I’ve undergone are bad things. They’ve taken things away from me (grades, friends…) – why on Earth would I want to embrace them? I want them gone!

So, my question: what does somebody who was the norm do when the norm is taken away from them and their differences are unacceptable (i.e. proper special consideration during schooling) in the real world? How are they supposed to love the broken body that they live with? I hesitate to say that those born with disabilities have an easier time than those who become disabled, but I’m probably missing something.

You should all be prepared to accommodate differences, even when it means a change or an extra effort. You should be prepared for this, because you expect as much already from me. You already expect me to change my very being to be able to accommodate how you operate. So you should not protest when you are called upon to open your minds, to change how you think, to change what you do. After all, at least you are not being asked to change what you are.

What an awesome (in the traditional sense of the word), powerful statement. Every time I read it I feel bigger and stronger. Righteous, even.
